Understanding Cookies
Modify your browser's cookie settings
To determine the version of Internet Explorer on your computer:
- Click Help from the menu at the top of the screen
- Click About (a screen should display giving you the version)
To determine the version of Netscape on your computer:
- Click Help from the menu at the top of the screen
- Click About Communicator (a screen should display giving you the version)
To determine the version of AOL on your computer:
- Click Help from the menu at the top of the screen
- Click About America Online

Internet Explorer
Internet Explorer 6.x:
- In Internet Explorer click on Tools at the top of the window.
- Select Internet Options.
- Click on the Privacy tab.
- In the center of the Privacy tab screen, there should be an Advanced button. Click this button.
- Ensure that Override automatic cookie handling is checked.
- First and Third party cookies should be set to Accept
- Check Always allow session cookies
- Click on OK
- Exit Internet Explorer and restart your browser
Internet Explorer 5.x (Windows):
- From the Tools menu, click
Internet Options.
- Click the Security tab.
- Click the Custom Level button.
- Click on the Advanced button
- Scroll down through the window to locate the
Cookie Section. Internet Explorer 5 contains two separate locations where
cookies are changed:
Allow Cookies that are stored on your computer.
Allow per-session Cookies, not stored.
- Enable your cookies at each location.
- Click OK.
- Exit Internet Explorer and restart your
browser
Internet Explorer 5.x (Macintosh):
- Click Edit
- Select Preferences
- Under the Receiving Files option,
select Cookies
- Under When receiving cookies:
select the desired level of cookie acceptance
- Click OK to finish
Internet Explorer 4.x:
- Click on VIEW.
- Go to INTERNET OPTIONS.
- Click Security tab.
- Click on Custom Level.
- Scroll Down to COOKIES.
- Enable Cookies should be selected.
- Click OK to exit
- Go to My AOL on the menu bar
- Pick WWW
- Go to the Advanced Settings option
on the Category menu
- Click Cookies
- When receiving cookies: Click Never Ask
- Click OK
For further instructions on how to change your cookies
settings, please use your browser's HELP documentation to make the appropriate
changes.
Netscape
Netscape Navigator 7.x
- Click Edit on the Toolbar.
- Click Preferences
- Click the Privacy and Security
category; expand the list to show the subcategories.
- Click Cookies
- Three options are displayed. Do the
following:
- If you want to be notified when a web site
tries to set a cookie, select Warn me before accepting a cookie.
Netscape Navigator 6.x
- Click Edit on the Toolbar.
- Click Preferences
- Click the Privacy and Security
category; expand the list to show the subcategories.
- Click Cookies
- Three options are displayed. Click the
appropriate choice: Do the following:
- If you want to be notified when a web site
tries to set a cookie, select Warn me before accepting a cookie.
Netscape Navigator 4.x
- Click on Edit, and then click
Preferences
- Click on the Advanced
- In the Cookies section, select
Accept all cookies
- Click OK
Netscape Navigator 3.x
- Go to Options on the menu bar
- Pick Network Preferences
- Click the Languages tab
- Click the checkbox next to Enable Java
- Click OK
AOL
- From the AOL Toolbar, select Settings.
- Select Internet Web Options
- Select Use your Internet Explorer
Settings to set advanced browser options.
- Select the Privacy tab
- Select Advanced
- Deselect override automatic cookie
handling button
- Click OK to exit.
- From the AOL Toolbar, select Settings.
- Select Preferences
- Select Internet Properties (WWW)
- Select the Privacy tab
- Select Advanced
- Deselect override automatic cookie
handling button
- Click OK to exit.
- From the AOL Toolbar, select Settings.
- Select Preferences
- Select Internet Properties (WWW)
- Select the Privacy tab
- Select Advanced
- Deselect override automatic cookie
handling button
- Click OK to exit.
- From the AOL Toolbar, select Settings.
- Select Preferences
- Select Internet Properties (WWW)
- Select the Security tab
- Select the Custom Level tab
- Under Allow Cookies that are stored on your
computer click Enable
- Under Allow per-session cookies (not
stored) click Enable
- Select OK, Yes you want to save the
settings
- From the AOL Toolbar, select Settings
- Select Preferences
- Select Internet Properties (WWW)
- Select the Security tab
- Select the Custom Level tab
- Under Allow Cookies that are stored on your
computer click Enable
- Under Allow per-session cookies (not
stored) click Enable
- Select OK, Yes you want to save the
settings
- Go to My AOL
- Pick WWW
- Click the Security tab
- Go to Custom Level
- Scroll down to find Cookie
- Click Enable
- Click OK
- Click on Preferences
- Select on the WWW button
- Click on the Advanced tab
- Select the Accept all cookies
checkbox
Browser does not give you the ability to turn off
cookies
Enable Cookies on AOL (v4.x) for MACINTOSH:
- Click on MEMBERS or MY AOL.
- Click PREFERENCES.
- Click on WWW or WEB.
- Click on ADVANCED TAB and scroll down
until you see the word COOKIES.
- ENABLED should be selected.
- Click OK to exit.
Enable Cookies on AOL (v3.x) for MACINTOSH:
- Cookies are NOT available through v3.x for
Mac. AOL recommends upgrading to AOL 5.0.
- This is available to download at
http://free.aol.com.
Opera
Opera 7.11
- From the File menu, choose
Preferences.
- Click the Privacy category.
- Check Enable Cookies.
- From the Normal Cookies drop-down
menu, select Automatically accept all cookies.
- From the Third Part drop-down menu,
select Automatically accept all cookies.
- Click OK.
Mozilla
Mozilla
- Go to Edit on top of browser
- Choose Preferences on bottom of list
- Open the Privacy & Security menu on
left hand side of box.
- On right hand side of box choose Enable
all cookies
- Press OK
Firefox
Mozilla Firefox
- Select Tools | Options... from
the main menu.
- Select Privacy from the left panel of
options.
- Expand the Cookies options on the
right.
- Select Enable Cookies.
- Select for the originating website only.
Safari
Safari 1.0
- From the Safari Menu, choose
Preferences.
- Click the Security icon.
- In the Accept Cookies: selection box,
chose Always or Only from sites you navigate to.
Camino
Camino
- Select Preferences from the Camino
menu.
- Select the Privacy icon.
- Select Enable cookies.
- Close the Preferences by clicking in the
window's close box
Konqueror
Konqueror
- Under Settings select Configure
Konqueror.
- In the Settings window, select
Cookies.
- On the right-hand side panel select Enable
Cookies.
Try a different browser/Update your
current browser
AOL users in particular may want to try using a different browser other than the
default AOL Browser:
- Connect to AOL as you normally do
- Start a separate web browser program (other
than the AOL browser) such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape
