HME Industry Patiently Awaits Omnibus Bill Introduction

Breaking News: Rural Relief Competitive Bidding and CRT Accessories Legislation Not a Part of Year-End Omnibus Bill

By: Collin Brecher, VGM Government Relations

The fate of competitive bidding relief for the HME industry now rests in the hands of Congress. After countless meetings, fly-ins, conference calls and messages sent through the VGM DC Link, the work of HME providers throughout the country has produced the best result we could have hoped for - a chance for our bills to be included in the omnibus spending bill. There is nothing we can do now but wait to see how the legislation will unfold.

Congress is set to adjourn at the end of this week, but not without passing the omnibus bill that funds the federal government. An omnibus bill is a single document accepted by a single vote that packages together several measures into one. Congress must pass the omnibus bill in order to appropriate money for government spending. When you hear the threatening rhetoric on television that the government is going to shut down without the spending bill being passed, this is the bill they’re referencing.

Once the bill is announced, it’s expected that Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) will allow 72 hours to review the entire bill that could be thousands of pages long. We would expect voting to occur on Thursday and Friday. If our bills are included in the omnibus as expected, we will have just a few more days to wait out the conclusion to our year-long battle.

The DMEPOS industry has been bruised and battered, but has prevailed thus far. We hope Friday will be a day to celebrate the passage of competitive bidding relief to providers across the country. The only thing we can do now is to wait, sending hopeful thoughts, prayers and vibes that we will have a victory in hand.

While the fight has not ended, the perseverance of providers has gotten us this far. Please continue to check the VGM DC Link, Facebook and Twitter for updates from our VGM Government Relations team.
