For Donna, access to non-invasive vent therapy is all that stands between living at home and living in a facility. However, like many others, the therapy Donna relies on is being challenged by Medicare’s rampant audits. After Medicare’s denial of Donna’s Trilogy and months of writing to Congress, Heather Meehan, director of the Complex Respiratory Program at Midwest Respiratory and Rehab, decided to capture her patient’s story on video to put a face to the issue.

Heather admits that recording Donna’s story was difficult but wanted Congress to understand the importance of NIV therapy.

“It was very hard, we all cried,” said Heather, “but, Medicare denials are a quiet problem that have devastating impacts on our patients. Our government leaders are not fully aware of this situation.” She encourages other providers to help tell their patients’ stories, as well. “Our patients do not have a big voice like the ALS Association to stand up for them, so we need to,” said Heather.

If the safety of your patients is being compromised by Medicare’s audits and/or cuts, People for Quality Care is ready to work with you to tell their stories. Contact Kelly Turner, director of Advocacy at [email protected] to get started.
