Did you know that every 13 seconds, an older adult is seen in the emergency department for a fall-related injury?
September is Fall Prevention Month. Among older adults, falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries, such as hip fractures and head traumas. Of those falls, the National Institute of Aging says 80 percent of these falls are in the bathroom. Due to a number of slick and slippery surfaces, bathrooms are very hazardous for seniors living at home. Fortunately, these falls are a public health problem that is largely preventable.
Encourage your customers to stay safe in their homes! Many bathroom safety products can be bought for cash, are easy to install or operate, and are relatively inexpensive. Several bath safety products can also be sold as accessory or add-on products to larger bathroom products, allowing the customer to safely maneuver their bathroom (and also adding to your bottom line!).
The five bathroom safety products every HME should have in their showroom are:
- Grab Bars
- Transfer Benches
- Flexible Shower Wands
- Bath Seats
- Non-slip Floor Mats
These products will give seniors and their loved ones peace of mind that they can live safely in their homes.
Take a Stand Against Falls!
People for Quality Care, together with the National Council on Aging, is encouraging HME providers to host fall prevention events during the month of September. A fall prevention screening is an event where professionals provide participants with specific exams to assess if they are at risk for falls. The screening might include:
- Vision exams
- Balance and gait testing
- Blood pressure checks
- Foot exams
- Medication review
