Texas providers met with key congressional members over the past week to gather support for competitive bidding relief. Providers met with Rep. John Culberson (R-Texas) in Houston and Rep. Kevin Brady (R-Texas) in Conroe, Texas.

These meetings are very important as Rep. Culberson is a highly ranked member of the House Committee on Appropriations, and Rep. Brady is chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee. Both of these committees are heavily involved in HME policy initiatives, and it is key to have support from them in our fight against rural rollout.

Especially in an election year, members of Congress are more accessible than ever as they hold town hall meetings and spend more time in their home district. It is important that providers take this opportunity to discuss challenges that providers are facing as CMS continuously makes it more difficult to remain in business to supply beneficiaries with quality medical equipment.

Nearly 20 VGM members attended the two meetings with the main discussion centered around the approaching July reimbursement cuts and the importance of legislation to delay the cuts until a long-term solution can be implemented. VGM’s Bob Rodriquez was in attendance at both of these meetings and was pleased with just how understanding the representatives were to the beneficiary and provider threats with the approaching cuts.

Providers like these are vital to the grassroots efforts of gathering nationwide support of Congress. As we move forward and work diligently to gain support for legislation that will provide for a 15-month freeze to reimbursement rates as S.2736 does, we need as much support from providers as possible.
