Why Respiratory? Why Heartland?

By Bob Hoffman, RRT, Vice President, Nationwide Respiratory

I have to admit, there just has not been a lot of good news coming our way about the respiratory industry. It started with oxygen capped rentals years ago, followed by competitive bid rates that took oxygen reimbursements to new lows. CPAP reimbursements have declined, while at the same time, the burden of face-to-face follow-up is on the HME’s plate to ensure it happens. Guess we could throw audits in there too, right? So, why would anybody want to continue to provide respiratory services?

I am not a real “quotes” type of guy, but as Thomas Edison said, “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.”

Respiratory went from the look of a tuxedo to overalls. However, does that mean there is no opportunity? Obviously, with the reduced margins, it certainly isn’t as easy to remain profitable in the respiratory arena as it once was. It takes more work and a change of old habits to maintain acceptable margins.

Vendors are Here to Help You

Companies like AffloVest and So Clean offer additional revenue streams. S3 Sleep Solutions and Services keeps your CPAP patients engaged with their PAP therapy and is a solution for resupply. Philips Respironics offers advanced therapies for your sleep and COPD patients and programs to help you succeed. Over 70 vendors will be at VGM’s Heartland Conference June 12-15, each of which provides opportunities to enhance your business.

Heartland provides you the opportunity to network with other providers from across the country so you can learn how other business models may potentially improve yours. Maybe I am a quote guy after all, because “there is no substitute for experience.” Heartland is a place where you can learn from others in the industry…and have fun while doing it.

There absolutely is opportunity in respiratory. Put on your overalls, come to Heartland, and you just may leave in a tuxedo.

In the meantime, I invite you to check out this Heartland video that a few of my friends and I made and to click here to register for the conference.

One of a Kind

Heartland Conference is a one-of-a-kind learning experience at an all-inclusive price of $425 per attendee, unless, of course, you sign up three or more people, then the price drops to $375 per attendee.
