Why Respiratory? Why Heartland?

I have to admit, there just has not been a lot of good news coming our way about the respiratory industry. It started with oxygen capped rentals years ago, followed by competitive bid rates that took oxygen reimbursements to new lows. CPAP reimbursements have declined, while at the same time, the burden of face-to-face follow-up is on the HME’s plate to ensure it happens. Guess we could throw audits in there too, right? So, why would anybody want to continue to provide respiratory services?

I am not a real “quotes” type of guy, but as Thomas Edison said, “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.”

Respiratory went from the look of a tuxedo to overalls. However, does that mean there is no opportunity? Obviously, with the reduced margins, it certainly isn’t as easy to remain profitable in the respiratory arena as it once was. It takes more work and a change of old habits to maintain acceptable margins.
