Introducing the DMERT Group, Part 2: New Online Tech Training

Published in Member Communities on Thursday, July 5, 2018

U.S. Rehab has been working on a program for the last year that will grant more credibility to the CRT and DME industries. The Durable Medical Equipment Repair and Training (DMERT) Group is a new industry non-profit organization intended to provide proper certification to repair technicians in the DME and CRT arena. With this type of certification, we can increase the credibility of repair technicians in our industry. The DMERT Group offers online education for repair technicians looking to earn DMERT Level 1 certification.

Power and manual wheelchair equipment are classified as medical devices. Medical devices should work properly to maintain the health and wellness for the end user. CRT equipment is constantly changing, and we need to continue to change with it.

In response to this need, VGM, U.S. Rehab and FIOS DME Repair Training have developed a large volume of online and in-person training programs to help technicians stay sharp and feel prepared to tackle any variety of repair task, small or large. CMS requires technicians to have 10 hours of continuing education per year specific to rehab technology. U.S. Rehab has the ability to provide these credits online and in-person through the education courses. These courses are approved for CEUs by accrediting bodies, so you can be assured they meet the high standards for education in our industry.

VGM, U.S. Rehab and FIOS DME Repair Training have recently developed and launched new online tech training courses that are consistent, effective, and approved by the DMERT Group. The DMERT courses are separated by 3 different levels, each reflecting the different types of equipment. The DMERT Level 1 courses train on standard DME, including canes, crutches, walkers, lift chairs, rollators, manual wheelchairs, and Group 2 power wheelchairs. These online courses are meant to be used toward achieving the Durable Medical Equipment Repair Technician (DMERT) Level 1 certification. Level 1 certification is achieved by passing an online theory exam and a hands-on competency exam.

Do you have an experienced tech who would be ready for the Level 1 certification? U.S. Rehab members can purchase the online theory exam for $25. Once this part is done, the DMERT Group will be in contact about scheduling the Level 1 hands-on competency exam.

We are currently working on Level 2 online courses that will include Group 3 power wheelchair repair, programming and electronics. These courses are estimated to be done in August 2018. For more information on the new online training courses available, go to https://www.dmertgroup.com/dmert-approved-courses.

The online, DMERT-approved training provides repair technicians with greater understanding of DME and CRT equipment in order to obtain proper certification. Make sure to check out next month’s article that will diver deeper into the purpose of the creation of the DMERT Group.
