Introducing the DMERT Group, Part 3: The Purpose of the DMERT Group

Published in Member Communities on Thursday, August 2, 2018

Over the last year, U.S. Rehab helped develop a program that will grant more credibility to the CRT and DME industries. The Durable Medical Equipment Repair and Training (DMERT) Group is a new industry non-profit organization intended to provide proper certification to repair technicians in the DME and CRT arena. With this type of certification, we can increase the credibility of repair technicians. The DMERT Group as a whole strives to establish guidelines of what can be expected of repair technicians operating in the industry, how to evaluate if they are meeting these requirements, and provide ways to offer educational support for those who fall short of qualifying, so they can build their knowledge and skill to the expected level.

The DMERT Group has taken it to the next level by establishing written exams that represent the tech’s level of understanding the repair requirements for the equipment reflected in the following DMERT course education levels. The DMERT Group also established a competency exam to test the technician on their ability to understand both why and how to repair equipment and to perform that repair within an acceptable timeframe. This two-pronged approach will help ensure the credibility and competence of the DME and CRT industry at the level needed to protect its integrity. After passing these tests, the tech will receive a certificate of completion that proves their high-level understanding of industry knowledge.

The DMERT Group is also working to protect the integrity of the manufacturers, as they are in need of assurance that their equipment is repaired by qualified and trained technicians at all times. Manufacturers face the possibility of costly liability issues from poor or improper equipment maintenance. With the establishment of the DMERT Group and the exam process, U.S. Rehab and VGM are ensuring that only qualified technicians can repair the manufacturers’ equipment and, in turn, improve the well-being and safety of our clients. VGM and U.S. Rehab continue to promote credibility and awareness of the industry we live and work in each and every day. With technicians who earn certificates proving their competency in DME and CRT repair, there will be more consistency and efficiencies in the medical repair vocation and the industry.

The DMERT Group will keep the CRT and DME industry at a level that all providers can continue to keep their doors open and keep their clients happy. U.S. Rehab and VGM continue to invest in the future of your business and the industry as whole to maintain a safe, healthy work environment with quality products and services delivered at a reasonable cost for the patients we serve.
