Alan Morris

In an excerpt from an executive summary on the results of the most recent HME News/VGM Financial Benchmarking Survey by Alan Morris, SVP of Strategy, VGM & Associates, the home medical equipment (HME) industry is reported to be on a strong upward trajectory, projected to grow 6.1% annually over the next decade. This expansion is fueled by three major forces:

  • An aging population
  • Rising chronic care needs
  • A shift toward home-based treatment

These trends reinforce the critical role HME providers play in today’s care continuum.

Key Growth Categories

Respiratory and sleep solutions lead the charge, with 59% of providers identifying these as top priorities for innovation and investment. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) also represents a high-growth opportunity, while categories like oxygen and retail require targeted strategies. Providers optimizing service delivery will be best positioned to enhance margins and patient satisfaction.

Technology: A Strategic Imperative

As reimbursement pressures mount, technology adoption is no longer optional. Automation in billing, insurance verification, resupply, and intake processes helps providers reduce costs, improve accuracy, and enhance patient experience. Digital tools are essential for operational efficiency and long-term sustainability.

Payer Landscape & Contracting Strategies

Medicare Advantage growth and narrow networks are reshaping competitive dynamics. Providers that embrace data analytics, pricing transparency, and value-based models will be best positioned to thrive.

Success in the HME market hinges on contracting agility, product innovation, and operational scale, supported by technology and strategic partnerships.
