Florida Becomes First State To Follow Medicare; Issues A Six-month Moratorium On DMEPOS Suppliers Enrolling In Medicaid

On Thursday, March 26, 2026, the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) issued a temporary moratorium on enrollment of new Medicaid providers for Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics, and Supplies (DMEPOS).
The statewide moratorium will remain in place for an initial six-month period. Under this moratorium, the Agency will not accept any new applications for DME providers for Florida Medicaid enrollment. The Agency will continue processing DMEPOS provider applications submitted on or before March 20, 2026. Existing DME providers may continue to provide and bill for authorized services.
No Medicaid recipients will lose access to services needed from DME providers. Should any recipient have difficulty accessing services, they can contact the Florida Medicaid helpline at 877-254-1055 for assistance.
Echoing the message issued by CMS Administrator Mehmet Oz almost one month to the date of the Medicare enrollment moratorium, AHCA’s Secretary Shevaun Harris said:
“The (Florida Agency for Health Care Administration) is continually looking at ways to strengthen fraud detection and prevention strategies, and over the last year, we have taken intentional enforcement action to hold providers accountable and safeguard taxpayer dollars. This moratorium is just one example of the many efforts being put in place to curb fraud, waste, and abuse in the Medicaid program and to ensure Medicaid recipients are able to receive care from high-quality providers.”
Much like the Medicare moratorium, the Florida moratorium applies to entities whose primary function is furnishing durable medical equipment and supplies (regardless of supply type) directly to another party, such as to (1) Medicaid patients with a medical order (including mail order) or (2) other medical providers and suppliers, such as hospitals, pharmacies, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, physician groups, and rehabilitation agencies. The moratorium does not apply to DMEPOS suppliers that operate as part of a pharmacy, hospital, or other medical provider, nor does it apply to businesses for which the provision of durable medical equipment and supplies is a secondary function.
