![A More Proactive Approach to RePAP through Resmed]()
HMEs spend a lot of time thinking about how to bring new patients into PAP therapy. But there’s another opportunity within the patient population you already serve: RePAP.
Patients may become eligible for replacement PAP equipment without realizing it. They may not know when it’s time for a new device, whether they qualify, or what steps they need to take. And for HME teams already balancing new patient setups, resupply, and ongoing support, consistently identifying and reconnecting with those patients can be difficult.
The challenge isn’t recognizing the RePAP opportunity. It’s creating a consistent way to act on it.
The Opportunity is There. The Process Often Isn’t.
Only 56% of HMEs say they proactively reach out to patients for RePAP.1 For those without a proactive program, the barriers are practical: 44% cite lack of staff resources, 30% difficulty tracking and identifying eligible patients, and 28% documentation requirements.1
That leaves many HMEs handling replacement requests as they come in rather than proactively identifying patients who may be eligible.
A more proactive approach can help turn RePAP from an occasional request into a repeatable part of your patient workflow.
Don’t Wait for Patients to Start the Conversation
Patients may not know when they’re eligible for replacement. And physicians may not always initiate the conversation, either.
While 73% of sleep physicians surveyed are aware that PAP devices are validated for five years, only 30% say they initiate RePAP conversations when patients reach the five-year mark. Another 35% wait until patients report problems.2
That creates an opportunity for HMEs to be more proactive. Rather than waiting for a patient to recognize the need for replacement, your team can identify patients who may be eligible and help them understand what comes next.
Start with Identification
The first step is knowing which patients may benefit from replacement equipment.
Patient information and available reporting tools can help your team identify and prioritize potential RePAP patients. What that looks like will vary based on your organization, technology, and processes.
The goal is simple: create a reliable way to find potential replacement opportunities instead of relying on patients to find you.
Create a Consistent Way to Reconnect
Knowing whom to contact is only part of the equation.
Patients also need to understand why they’re being contacted, what replacement eligibility means, and what they need to do next. Practical outreach templates, conversation guides, and patient education resources can help your team communicate more consistently without creating every interaction from scratch.
Proactive doesn’t have to mean complicated. It means having a repeatable approach your team can use to reconnect with the right patients at the right time.
Help Patients Take the Next Step
Replacement eligibility can bring questions: Am I eligible for a new device? Why should I replace the equipment I’m using today? What documentation do I need? What happens next?
HMEs are well-positioned to help patients navigate those questions. By providing education, explaining the process, and helping patients understand their next steps, you can make replacement easier to navigate while continuing to support patients beyond their initial setup.
Build a RePAP Approach That Works for You
There isn’t one RePAP model that will work for every HME. Your patient population, technology, staffing, and existing processes will shape the right approach.
But it can start with three simple steps:
- Identify. Find and prioritize patients who may benefit from replacement equipment.
- Reconnect. Create a consistent approach to outreach instead of waiting for patients to initiate the conversation.
- Support. Give your team the resources to educate patients, answer questions, and guide them through what comes next.
Through the Resmed and VGM collaboration, VGM members have access to practical RePAP resources designed to support patient identification, outreach, and education.
Your next opportunity may already be in your patient population. A more proactive RePAP approach can help you find it and act on it.
