OIG Report Signals Increased Fraud Oversight for DMEPOS Suppliers

The HHS Office of Inspector General (OIG) recently released a white paper examining ongoing Medicare fraud involving durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies (DMEPOS).
The report highlights how criminal organizations continue to exploit weaknesses in supplier enrollment, physician ordering processes, and beneficiary identification systems to bill Medicare for equipment that was never provided or never medically necessary.
While the report focuses on stopping fraud, it also signals that legitimate DMEPOS suppliers should expect increased program integrity oversight in the years ahead. OIG recommends strengthened supplier enrollment screening, more scrutiny of ownership changes, expanded use of artificial intelligence and data analytics, greater physician engagement in verifying orders, and increased oversight of suppliers serving Medicare Advantage beneficiaries.
