Medicare Advantage Plans (MAPs) come with both benefits and drawbacks, but HME suppliers often encounter more challenges. In fact, many of these plans frequently delay payments or deny medically necessary equipment and supplies to their beneficiaries.

As reported in a Q&A article with HME News and Kim Cuce’, Director of Business Optimization at VGM & Associates, these plans are experiencing significant growth. However, suppliers can adopt strategic measures to enhance their business efficiency.

  • Be meticulous in scrutinizing every contract. Suppliers can ensure they understand allowable charges, rental or purchase terms, modifier usage, and authorization requirements, which helps avoid costly mistakes and streamline operations.
  • Learn to negotiate. Effective negotiation ensures that suppliers only accept profitable orders, preventing financial losses and improving overall profitability.
  • Secure prior authorization. Securing prior authorization for items under traditional Medicare can simplify processes with MAPs, reducing administrative burdens and speeding up service delivery.

A proactive, informed, and strategic approach to MAPs can lead to more efficient business operations, better resource allocation, and enhanced financial performance.
