MyHealth at Home: Enhancing Patient Care Beyond Hospital Walls

In the heart of the Midwest, where the University of Kansas Health System stands as a pillar of medical excellence, a new initiative has been quietly transforming patient care. MyHealth at Home, a VGM & Associates member, has been making waves for the past two years, ensuring that patients continue to receive the care they need even after they leave the hospital. At the helm of this initiative is Adam Smerecki, the System Director of Spend Management HME, whose professional journey aligns perfectly with the mission he champions.

A Personal Connection

Adam Smerecki’s journey into the world of home medical equipment (HME) began in 1985, driven by a family connection. His father worked for an HME company, and young Adam often accompanied him to work. What started as casual visits soon turned into a lifelong passion. 

“I wandered into work with him one day and never left,” Adam recalls. “Over time, I developed a real passion for this industry, and it became my lifetime career."

Adam’s dedication to his work is fueled by a profound sense of purpose. 

“As my career matured into different areas of the business, I saw I was able to positively affect the lives of people who really needed help. I was committed from that point on,” he explains. 

This commitment is evident in every aspect of MyHealth at Home, where the focus is always on providing comfort and care to patients.

The Birth of MyHealth at Home

The idea for MyHealth at Home was born out of a simple yet profound desire: to make the transition from hospital to home as seamless as possible for patients. 

Janie Ott, Vice President of Spend Management, stated, “At the University of Kansas Health System, the patient is first and foremost in our care. We want their care journey to be seamless. When a patient is discharged from one of our facilities, we want them to have easy access to the supplies needed to continue their care at home. Making home health products easily accessible helps us to provide end-to-end care to our patients.”

This commitment to patient-centered care led to the creation of MyHealth at Home, a service that has been active for two years, providing essential home health products to patients right at their doorstep.

A Commitment to Care

MyHealth at Home is more than just a service; it’s a lifeline for patients who need continuous care.

“We have created an environment in which our patients know we are available to them 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,” Adam says.

David Gaston, Senior Director of Business Development and Strategic Initiatives, echoes this sentiment. 

“We are thankful for the opportunity to provide additional avenues to care for our patients,” he says, highlighting the team’s gratitude for being able to make a difference in patients’ lives.

MyHealth at Home is a testament to the power of compassionate, continuous care. By ensuring patients have access to the necessary home health products, Adam Smerecki and his team are helping them continue their recovery journey with ease and confidence.
