Lindy Tentinger, President of VGM & Associates, is an official member of Forbes Business Council. In her latest article, she shares insights on getting “real” in your company culture. Authenticity and human connection are essential for effective leadership, especially in a high reliability organization. Leaders should foster an environment where real conversations, vulnerability, and genuine care for employees are prioritized. This approach builds trust, engagement, and a supportive workplace culture.

“At the end of the day, people just need someone to believe them,” shares Tentinger. “It’s our time as leaders to be that someone. This is the future of work as I see it.”

Further advice from Tentinger includes:

  • Embrace Real Conversations: Leaders should address real-life issues and create an environment where people feel safe to share their true experiences and emotions.
  • Walk the Talk: Demonstrate leadership by offering flexible solutions, celebrating wins, and taking care of both yourself and your employees.
  • Be Vulnerable: Share personal stories, admit shortcomings, and express when you’re not at your best to build trust and openness.
  • Start with Leaders: Share your vision, establish goals, reward achievements, and provide honest feedback to your leadership team.
  • Encourage Fun and Connection: Bond with your team by letting your guard down and engaging in fun activities.
  • Clear Expectations and Resources: Clearly communicate expectations and familiarize employees with available resources, such as HR and employee assistance programs.

“AI can take over a lot of things, but true human connection will be a tough one,” concludes Tentinger. “The human connection inspires people to be better.”

True human connection and empathy are essential in leadership. Inspiring and connecting with people on a personal level remains a uniquely human capability.
