I am excited to share my recent experience attending the NCART, U.S. Rehab, and iNRRTs Fly-In in Washington D.C. This event brought together around 40 attendees, including manufacturers, suppliers, and wheelchair users, to advocate for crucial issues affecting our industry.
During the fly-in, I had the opportunity to meet with representatives from both the House and Senate, including those from Iowa, Idaho, Washington, New York, Colorado, and Minnesota. Our discussions covered several important topics:
- Competitive Bidding and Accreditation Concerns: We addressed the ongoing challenges and concerns related to competitive bidding and the need for accreditation processes to remain unchanged to ensure access to necessary equipment. This administration seems to believe that annual accreditation may reduce fraud, and that’s simply not the case.
- Coverage for Power Standing Systems: We emphasized the continued need to establish coverage for Power Standing Systems, as we are still waiting for CMS to move this forward. These systems are vital for improving the quality of life and health for many individuals.
- Support for H.R. 1703 and S. 247: We advocated for the passage of H.R. 1703 and S. 247, which would provide consumers with the option to upgrade their manual wheelchairs to titanium or carbon materials at no additional cost to Medicare or Medicaid. This seems like a no-brainer, as it offers significant benefits without increasing costs.
- Repair Reform: We discussed the importance of being reimbursed for travel and assessment time, as well as the need to eliminate the burdensome prior authorization process for repairs. These changes are essential for ensuring timely and effective repairs for our clients.
- Expansion of Telehealth Services: Lastly, we expressed our interest in permanently expanding telehealth services for PT and OT evaluations. Many legislative aides shared our interest and confidence that we will see an extension, although a permanent solution may take more time.
Overall, the fly-in was a productive and encouraging experience. I am optimistic about the progress we can make on these issues with continued advocacy and support from our community.
Thank you for your ongoing commitment to improving the lives of those we serve.
Sincerely,
