Important Update on Seat Elevation Covered Under Medicare

Published in Reimbursement and Billing Consulting on June 05, 2023

On May 16, 2023, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued the National Coverage Determination (NCD) for the Seat Elevation System as a covered item. This means that Medicare beneficiaries can now access this valuable device to enhance their mobility and quality of life. We believe this decision will significantly benefit individuals who require the Seat Elevation System to overcome mobility challenges.

The effective date of the NCD is May 16, 2023, which indicates that eligible services provided on or after this date will be covered by Medicare. However, it's important to note that the implementation process requires additional steps before reimbursement can be facilitated.

Typically, when an NCD is released, there is a period for implementation, during which the Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) develop the Local Coverage Determination (LCD). The LCD generally aligns with the NCD in terms of coverage criteria. While the NCD serves as a positive step forward, the development of the LCD is crucial to ensure proper reimbursement and clarify specific guidelines for coverage.

We are committed to keeping you informed throughout this process and will provide updates as they become available. Our team of experts is closely monitoring the situation and will promptly share any relevant information with you. We understand that staying up to date is essential, and we want to ensure that you have access to the most accurate and timely details.

In case you missed it, Dan Fedor, director of reimbursement for U.S. Rehab, recently hosted a webinar over the new NCD where he gave a lot of information and answered some of the commonly received questions. The recording can be watched here1515.

Please keep an eye out for future communications from us, as we will continue to share information as it's released. If you have any questions or require further assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out to Dan Fedor at dan.fedor@vgm.com.
