Unlock Your Potential: Why ATP Certification Matters in Complex Rehab

Published in Complex Rehab on May 22, 2025

What is an Assistive Technology Professional (ATP)?

An ATP is a service provider who analyzes the needs of consumers with disabilities, assists in selection of appropriate assistive technology, and provides training in the use of the selected device(s). To sell certain wheelchairs, suppliers must employ at least one RESNA-certified ATP with direct, in-person involvement in the wheelchair selection for the beneficiary.

Benefits of an ATP Certification

Becoming an ATP is a popular path often taken by occupational therapists (OTs), physical therapists (PTs), occupational therapy assistants (OTAs), physical therapy assistants (PTAs), and wheelchair technicians. With an ATP certification, one can both fill the needs of suppliers to sell certain wheelchairs and demonstrate that they have the skills and knowledge to complete their job as defined by the leading authority in the credentialing industry. With many ATPs nearing retirement, there is a growing demand for new professionals in this field. This demand increases marketability and opens opportunities across the U.S. By obtaining this certification, one can potentially open doors in their career while addressing industry needs and making a meaningful impact.

Using ATP Academy to Prepare for Success

We understand that studying for and passing the ATP exam can be challenging. Based on feedback that we've gotten from our U.S. Rehab members over several years, we meticulously designed a program to help participants successfully prepare for the ATP certification exam. The ATP Academy has been developed over the past year with input from a coursework designer and VGM Education and is led by Cindi Petito, OTR/L, ATP, Director of VGM Live at Home. One of its standout features is its flexibility. Participants can complete the coursework at their own pace, making it easier to balance professional development with existing responsibilities. This flexibility extends to completing modules outside of regular working hours, accommodating various schedules.

The ATP Academy offers a robust curriculum that covers essential topics such as:

  • Anatomy and Physiology: Understanding the human body and its functions.
  • Mobility and Seating: Manual and power wheelchair techniques and principles for optimal patient supports, including custom seating and alternative drive controls.
  • Computer Technologies: Applying information and communication technology (ICT) concepts, including augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).
  • Service and Delivery: Standards of practice for providing effective and compassionate care.

One of the standout features of the ATP Academy is its flexibility. Participants can complete the coursework at their own pace, making it easier to balance professional development with existing responsibilities.
