Wound Care 101: A Guide for DMEPOS Providers

As a VGM and U.S. Rehab member, DMEPOS providers can leverage the expertise of real professionals who truly understand their industry. VGM Wound Care presents a comprehensive program designed to assist members in effectively offering wound care products and services, meeting patient needs, and concurrently expanding their business revenue streams.

Guided by industry expert and Certified Wound Ostomy Nurse (CWON) Heather Trumm, the VGM Wound Care community provides support in various areas, including negative pressure wound therapy, support surfaces, nutritional products, compression therapy, wound care dressings, ostomy, and diabetic supplies. Heather Trumm, as the Director of VGM Wound Care, stays updated on the latest developments in the wound care industry, ensuring members receive relevant education on entering and succeeding in the business.

Recent articles by Heather offer guidance for DMEPOS providers to enter into the wound care space and explain why it can be beneficial for businesses, as well as provide an overview of the wound care category in general as it relates to DME. Specific articles emphasize the significance of skin health, influencing overall well-being. DMEPOS providers are encouraged to start gradually, selecting one of the five wound care categories:

  • Negative Pressure Wound Therapy
  • Support Surfaces
  • Nutritional Products
  • Compression Therapy
  • Wound Care Dressings

Providers are advised to gather insights from patients and referral sources about their current preferences to make informed decisions, emphasizing profitability in each category. It is recommended to assign a team member with sales and marketing expertise to lead the expansion and stress the importance of determining the payer mix, including billing to Medicare and private insurance.

VGM Wound Care offers resources, tools, and expert guidance to support businesses entering the wound care market, and providers are encouraged to explore opportunities in supplying home-based wound care equipment and materials.
