Today, we’re proud to spotlight two outstanding durable medical equipment (DME) champions whose advocacy efforts are making a meaningful difference: Robert Beard of YD Home Medical of Alabama and Rob Minicucci Jr. of Health System Services of New York. These individuals took time out of their busy schedules to personally connect with elected officials, demonstrating how local action can spark national change.

Making Advocacy Personal: Robert Beard’s Grassroots Impact

Robert Beard of YD Home Medical in Alabama recently showed the true power of grassroots advocacy by encouraging Representative Terri Sewell, a key member of the influential House Energy and Commerce Committee, to co-sponsor H.R. 2005.

With just two strategically crafted emails sent to Rep. Sewell’s health staff—and a few thoughtful follow-ups—Robert helped drive legislative support without ever leaving Alabama. No lobbyists, no trips to Washington—just authentic, local engagement.

 “Advocacy is like sales—you won’t persuade someone without building a relationship first,” said Robert. “That’s why it’s crucial for constituents in each district to connect with their legislators and/or staff. It doesn’t take much time, and while guidance and resources from VGM and AAHomecare are valuable, lawmakers want to hear directly from the people they represent—not just lobbyists.”

Thanks to his persistence, Robert has now formed a collaborative relationship with Rep. Sewell’s team, reinforcing that meaningful change can begin with a single step. His story serves as a powerful reminder: advocacy is for everyone, and sometimes, change begins simply by pressing “send.”

In Niagara Falls, New York, Rob Minicucci Jr. of Health System Services recently welcomed Senate Minority Leader Robert G. Ortt and District Director Andrew Dugan for a facility tour and discussion on DME access.
