Texas DME providers are speaking out against proposed Medicaid reimbursement rate cuts that threaten access to essential medical equipment for vulnerable patients. At a recent public hearing, voices from across the state shared powerful stories about the real-world impact of these cuts—some as high as 85%.
In a hearing filled with powerful testimonies, these Champions of Change exemplified the passion and urgency felt throughout the DME community:
- Stephen Hernandez, Angel Medical Supply (Houston): “If we're scared, imagine how the patients feel.” His testimony underscored the fear and urgency felt by providers statewide.
- Stephen Vigorito, parent advocate: Highlighted how cuts to enteral nutrition would reduce his son’s quality of life.
- Thomas Suniga, A&P Quality Care Medical: Warned that reduced rates could lead to more hospitalizations and longer wait times.
- Victoria Peterson, RespMed HomeCare (El Paso): Spoke on the long-term damage to provider networks and patient independence.
Testimonies were also submitted by VGM Group and many other organizations across the country, reflecting a united front against policies that threaten patient care and provider sustainability.
TexMEP, a statewide coalition, led the coordination effort—mobilizing providers, hosting prep calls, and ensuring strong representation at the hearing. Their advocacy is helping protect access to life-sustaining equipment like oxygen concentrators, feeding pumps, and mobility aids.
