As announced during the NCART and AAHomecare Legislative Conference last week, H.R. 1703, the Choices for Increased Mobility Act, was considered and advanced out of the House Energy & Commerce Health Subcommittee. This is a positive step forward for the CRT community.
The Health Subcommittee is part of the House Committee on Energy & Commerce and is often the first stop for Medicare-related legislation like H.R. 1703. Advancing out of subcommittee signals that the bill has enough support to move to the next stage—but there are still several steps ahead before it can become law.
What happens next?
Typically, the bill will move to the full Energy & Commerce Committee, where it may be included as part of a broader package of healthcare legislation for further debate, amendment, and a full committee vote.
About H.R. 1703:
This common-sense legislation would allow Medicare beneficiaries to pay the difference for an upgraded ultralightweight wheelchair (such as those made with titanium or carbon fiber), giving patients greater choice and access to equipment that better meets their needs.
While this is an important milestone and reflects strong momentum for the CRT industry, additional steps remain, including consideration by the full committee and potentially other committees before reaching the House floor.
A special thank you to Rep. John Joyce (R-PA) for leading this legislation and for Rep. Dan Meuser (R-PA) for his continued support of the CRT community. They are pictured below from the NCART Product Expo on Capitol Hill.
