Worker's Comp Prosthetic Bill In Iowa Passes House and Senate

Published in Orthotics & Prosthetics on May 25, 2022

Iowa bill H.F.2411, an act relating to replacements of permanent prosthetic devices for injured workers, passes House and Senate. Next stop - Governor’s office for signing!

The 2022 Iowa legislature adjourned sine die early this morning capping an extended 136-day session. The final two days of the session included the passage of a handful of remaining policy bills and the entire state budget, including H.F.2411, a bill allowing for prosthetic devices for a person injured on the job as long as it is medically necessary.

Prior to the passage of this bill, Iowa only allowed for one prosthetic per lifetime for workers injured on the job.

Todd Eagen, President of OPGA, says, “This was a necessary correction to the current law which only allowed for one permanent prosthetic per lifetime in Iowa. Depending on the age of the worker, over a lifetime they could legitimately need multiple prosthesis from a medically necessary standpoint. We are delighted with this necessary change to Iowa legislation.”

The H.F.2411 bill summary states: This bill requires an employer to furnish to an employee with a replacement permanent prosthetic device that is medically necessary as a result of a compensable injury that occurred while the employee was employed by the employer and the replacement of the prosthetic device would be considered reasonable medical care for the purposes of workers’ compensation.

The Governor has 30 days from the end of session to sign any bills transmitted to her in the final three days of session.
