Let Her Decide on the Hill

Published in Legislative Updates on June 27, 2019

Nikki Jensen and Tom Powers with the Let Her Decide Team were on Capitol Hill again last week advocating for H.R. 1370/S. 562 The Breast Cancer Patient Equity Act. They had 30 meetings with House and Senate staffers. The list of legislators they met with is at the end.

Our focus is currently on members of Senate Finance, House Ways and Means, Tom Powers, Sen. Duckworth, Nikki Jensen, and Sen. Durbinand House Energy and Commerce. These committees have jurisdiction in healthcare/Medicare. If legislators from these committees sign onto the bill, it signals to other legislators that the bill is a good policy change and should be supported. Other supporters are still meaningful, but these committees have more leverage with the legislation, therefore have been first priority.

Movement is going the right direction for the Breast Cancer Patient Equity Act. As of June 26, 2019, the H.R. 1370 has 26 co-sponsors and S. 562 has 4 co-sponsors.  It may take a few weeks for any additional signors to register on congress.gov after we’ve heard verbal commitments of co-sponsorship.

For the latest information on who’s signed on, go to congress.gov and look up bills H.R. 1370 or S. 562. If you don’t see your Senators or Representatives on this list, that means they haven’t signed on. Make sure to send a message to them by going to letherdecide.org asking them to support the legislation or call their office. We’ve made this very simple for you.

Here's how you can help

  • Step 1: Email your legislators by going to letherdecide.org and "Take Action."
  • Step 2: Call your legislators by calling the Capitol Hill Switchboard at 202-224-3121. An operator will connect you with the office. Or you can look up their direct number here.
  • Step 3: Use this script to help guide your conversation.
